Why Good Strategy Isn't Enough

Many organisations don't struggle because they lack good ideas. They struggle because they lack a clear way to translate strategy into execution. Over the years I've seen the same pattern emerge across technology and product organisations. Teams are busy, initiatives are progressing and roadmaps are full, yet leaders still find it difficult to answer a simple question:

Are we creating the outcomes we set out to achieve, or are we simply delivering more outputs?

This distinction becomes increasingly important as organisations grow. New teams, competing priorities and more complex operating models make it harder to align work with customer value and business outcomes. In today's environment, where AI is reshaping how organisations operate and leaders are expected to deliver more without proportional growth in headcount, clarity around execution has never been more important.

One organisation facing this challenge was LichtBlick, one of Germany's leading renewable energy providers. As the company evolved its planning approach, it recognised the need to strengthen the connection between strategy, execution and measurable outcomes.

Working closely with the leadership team, we undertook an organisational assessment, identified key opportunities for improvement and redesigned several aspects of the operating model—including planning, governance, prioritisation and execution. The result was rapid adoption of the recommendations, greater organisational alignment and a renewed focus on delivering customer outcomes rather than simply completing work.
